Assisted reproduction is an area of law that involves surrogacy, sperm donation, egg donation, embryo donation and other matters which are often sensitive issues for all involved. Lauren Duffer of Gaydos Duffer, P.C., has become particularly skilled in assisted reproduction during her more than 15 years of practicing family law.
Duffer first became involved in this area of the law when she worked for a Dallas firm that did a lot of adoption work. A couple came in, who were close to Duffer’s own age, and they were trying to choose between adoption or surrogacy.
The wife was concerned about how she felt about her husband having a genetic connection with the child when she would not have one. The wife contemplated whether adoption would be better so that neither one of them would have that biological link to the child.
Ultimately, they both decided they wanted to go the surrogacy route. Duffer helped them through their journey and realized she really loved helping people create their families through assisted reproduction.
Duffer then reached out to other agencies, got to know them, and began doing their legal work. She has now been doing this for more than 12 years and is one of the very few Texas attorneys who do this type of work.
Duffer stays in touch with some families she has helped. Some are even FB friends. One heart-warming story she tells is about her own experience where her 3 year old son (who is 4 years old now) had a best friend at school all year and the teacher asked permission to put her in contact with the child’s parents so the two children could have a play date.
Duffer agreed and was pleased to discover the parents of the child who had become her own child’s best friend were two dads she had represented in their surrogacy arrangement. Duffer couldn’t believe that her son and this child who she was involved in helping to create, met and became best friends through the legal process.
