What is the Role of a Legal Assistant in a Family Law Case?

In a family law case, a legal assistant will quickly become your new best friend.  Our litigation legal assistant handles all aspects of the case from participating in the intake process to finalization and closure of your case with the firm.  She is your first point of contact when you have questions or if you really just need someone to listen.  At Gaydos Duffer, P.C., we take a team approach to handling all of our family law matters which helps our office maintain an efficient workflow while keeping costs down for our clients.

Primary Roles of the Legal Assistance

At Gaydos Duffer, P.C., our legal assistant is an integral part of each family law case from start to finish.   She is a part of the very first meeting with the client and often has the most direct contact with a client throughout the case.  We have found that including our legal assistant in the initial consultations that it has helped to develop our professional relationships with our clients by putting a face to the name of the person whom the client will be corresponding with the most.  Our legal assistant is very involved in every aspect of the case and this helps our office to provide the utmost quality of care for each client because not only the attorney familiar with the aspects of their case. 

Some of the various tasks you would find our legal assistant working on are as follows:

  1. Intake processing/File Maintenance- This includes setting up and maintaining client file from the very first meeting through the closure of the case. This is extremely important for the attorneys as the legal assistant makes sure that every document an attorney may need at court or for a meeting is readily available.
  2. Drafting Legal Documents – Our legal assistant completes all initial drafts of pleadings, orders, notices, etc. in each case. The initial draft of any document is often what takes the most time.  Our legal assistant is exceptionally trained and because of this we are able to provide a high quality production of legal documents through the use of our legal assistant’s drafting skills thus reducing the amount of attorney’s fees our clients would have incurred had these documents initially been drafted by the attorneys.
  3. Scheduling – Our legal assistant handles all of our scheduling needs from hearings to mediations to telephone calls with clients or opposing counsel. She manages the attorney’s schedules and ensure that clients are informed regarding court appearances, mediation, and more.
  4. Hearing/Trial Preparations – Our legal assistant attends all contested hearings and final trials. She prepares the trial notebooks which include witness lists, exhibits, financials and various other documents that may be utilized during a hearing or final trial.  Trial preparations often take several days or even weeks, depending on the case, and by utilizing our legal assistant to the maximum capacity we are able to fully prepare cases for hearings or final trials in the most cost effective way.  Our legal assistant is extremely knowledgeable of each case and often assists the attorneys during hearings and trials in drawing on every piece of information available to ensure we are providing the absolute best representation to each client.

Our legal assistant has excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  She is also a trained mediator which has been essential in participating in client meetings, mediations, and assisting the attorney through all phases of a case.  Family law cases are often very emotionally charged and her training as both a legal assistant and a mediator has proven to be extremely beneficial in helping our clients manage those emotions during a trying time.  Our clients value her compassion and understanding.  She is a valued member of the Gaydos Duffer, P.C. team.
